Master Key System Design: getting ready
The office key ring has become the org chart.

The office key ring has become the org chart. Every manager carries a fistful of cuts, a couple of staff hold copies nobody remembers issuing, and when someone asks which key opens the records room, three different people give three different answers.
Worth answering before the call
Are any doors on a barrier-free path of travel? Which roles or departments need genuinely different levels of access? Are any doors part of a shared or condominium-controlled building system?
How does a master key system work in a shared or multi-tenant building?
A tenant's own hierarchy for their suite is designed and held separately from the building's shared systems, such as a condominium corporation's lobby or garage keying or a landlord's building-wide master. The two sit alongside each other rather than merging, so a tenant's private levels stay private while common areas continue to answer to whoever already manages them.
What does key control actually mean?
It means knowing, at any time, how many keys exist for a given door or level, who holds each one, and how a new copy would be authorized. A master key system supports key control by design, since keys are marked by role, logged by serial, and cut only against the chart, rather than copied informally whenever someone asks for one.
